I thought you could download Perian components and get Matroska video files to play in QuickTime. Am I wrong? Or is there some sort of compatibility issue with Lion and Perian? Because I always used to be able to play .mkv files in Quicktime on snow leopard. Now I can't. Any ideas why?

I saw a number of people in the Perian forums that seem to be having various issues with Perian and Lion, various problems seem to be arising, including .mkv playability, sound issues, and subtitle issues.

The Perian forum has a thread going on this here.

Some have had success with reinstalling the plugin, though there is no ETA on when an updated version will be out. Have you tried the files with VLC? Might be a good alternative until Perian is updated for Quicktime and Lion.

Yes, they work with VLC player. I did favour QuickTime, but I guess I'll stick with VLC until the issues are sorted. Thanks for the link to the Perian forums: I should have really checked there.
