Playing Netflix in 2nd monitor slows the computer down

I have a 2010 iMac 27" i7 with 12gb of ram

When I play other things like VLC works fine...but it seems that whenever I play any streaming video, youtube, netflix, some random video from some news site I can't do anything else on the computer.

only 5gb of memory will be in use but what a drag.

any suggestions?

Other info
I use chrome, updated, flash updated. everything is up to date.
