I've got a Powerbook in a Windows network work environment. There are two things that I seem to always run into.

1) forgetting to unmount a network share before i disconnect VPN or
2) shutting my computer lid (therefore causing it to fall asleep) while a network drive is mounted.

Once that happens, it freezes on me and forces me to reboot.

Is there any way around this? I try to remember to unmount, but it's kind of a pain and I can be seen walking around my office with an open laptop just so I don't cause it to fall asleep.

The one nice thing about Windows is that mounting and unmounting doesn't even exist. It's just connected or it's not all by itself.
