Playing/ripping region 1 DVD on a region 2 player

The dvd player on my Mac is set for region 2 (UK) but I want to be able to watch a TV programme (Sports Night) that has only been released on region 1. Can I do the following without changing from R2 to R1?

1) Play it using VLC
2) Rip it using Handbrake and than play off the HD, (I do this with all my DVDs so I can watch them on my iPod)

VLC plays regardless of the Region Code.
