Remember the days before OS X, where there was an audio format called 'system 7 sound' (used for the system alert sounds), and when you opened it, it played right in the finder without opening iTunes or Quicktime Player or anything else? I want to be able to have a sound as a startup item, playing directly from the Finder. I know you can preview sounds in the Finder, so it must be possible. Any ideas?

unfortunately this doesn't seem possible... i know it was discussed once before, but i don't think that anyone came up with anything.

and actually, you can't play items from the finder. when you "preview" them, the finder is merely loading a quicktime plugin that allows the use of the quicktime web controls in a finder window... so really quicktime IS playing the file, just without opening the application.
