Sorry if this isn't the correct forum, but I think it is software related. I have a bunch of home movies and personally owned movies that I want to back up, and although the drive on my MBP is fine, I'm afraid I'll wear it out. I'd rather get an external drive.

I'm pretty sure I will go with the LaCie burner. Now for the question, and my confusion. Will I be able to watch the movies in the external burner out of the box, or do I have to install something? My searches have not been helpful; I see where many people use this burner successfully, so obviously it can be done; but I don't know if they are using some sort of script to watch the videos on it. I've read where Mac OSX doesn't allow you to watch video on an external drive without a hack.

Also, some of the ripping software requires some playback to activate: RipIt for example. If I can't watch/load the video, there is no playback. Same thing for MTR's Rip'N'Rebuild feature.

I know the movies can be watched with VLC on the external drive. I had assumed I would just plug the drive in, plop in the DVD and go from there.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.
