I see that a few others have had similar issues to the one I describe below, but none seem to have the exact same issue, and most have not been replied to, so we'll see how this goes.
After I updated to 10.8, I was unable to sync some podcasts. (I'm not trying to claim the update did this, I merely noticed it after the update.) They would show up in the podcast section of the phone when I had it connected to iTunes, but when I would look on the phone they would be missing. I resolved this by turning Podcast sync off, and then back on.
The same thing happend with Playlists, however after repeating the aforementioned steps new playlists that are created still do not sync. I'm attaching a screenshot to clarify how I'm doing this. In the past if I made a playlist in iTunes, and chose "Sync Music" with "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres" selected it would sync the playlists.
