Sony has released firmware 2.70 for the PlayStation 3. The new firmware adds the following features:

Chat and messaging

• Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals.

• Access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

[Unconfirmed reports suggest Text Chat is limited to 30 (yes, thirty) characters per message]

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

• Sort your friends via their online status

• Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

• Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future

• Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Additional Features

• Copy and paste from Web browser

• Volume/Level normalizer for Music

Firmware is available as a free download from the settings menu -> software update or directly here:

atleast in game chat voice is coming if your in game the icon is blured out for now i belive this is just a build up for that few other nice things u can back up movies and tv shows to a hd and comparing trophies seem to load alot faster as well even while in game.

A small thing I notice from the new update. Afterwards I downloaded the Titan pack for UT3 and noticed that it now tells you the expected download completion time. A small but handy little extra.

I hope they're planning something big for 3.0 like an entire new interface. The XMB still takes forever to load icons if you activate it within a game.

I still don't understand why they don't keep the PSP and PS3 features in sync (hardware permitting). Why can't the PS3 load metadata and artwork for .m4a files? The PSP can.

The 30 character line limit for messaging is dumb.

I really wish they'd figure out how to make the PS3 update quicker... right now it takes about 30 minutes of effort to get my PS3 updated.... I hear this isn't something I'm alone on.

You must have a fast internet connection :D

It takes well over an hour for me to download & update.

I think at one point I downloaded the update on my Mac, transferred it to a USB stick and installed it that way and it went a lot faster... but now I'm just too lazy. So I turn on the PS3, start the install/download, and go to bed.

I for one think that text chat while gaming is a great idea. I don't do voice chat (so far), and sending back and forth messages with someone to discuss which map to play next was really lame.

I like the in game chat, could be better though.

Good for asking people to invite you into games etc.

Edit: And yeah, it must've taken me around and hour to download and install the update. :(

I have heard some people are a lot quicker up and down! but a minute!!!

Do you think yours is smaller ? Explains the minute I guess :D

:p (j/k innuendo approved)

well I can't talk about size;)! although I just ran a speed test on my connection and...
