Kirkland water on Amazon is $31.40 for a 40 pack of 16.9 ounce bottles.

16.9 ounce x 40 = 676 ounces.

Water is 128 ounces per gallon.

676 divided by 128 = 5.28125 gallons per 40 pack of 16.9 ounce bottles.

$31.40 divided by 5.28125 = $5.9455 per gallon.

That can't be right.

I refill our 5 gallon water bottle a few times a month.

$1.25 at Walmart or the local Watermill Express.

25¢ a gallon.

And Kirkland is a Costco brand, hence buying the stuff elsewhere is likely to be more expensive.

Almost all bottled water is simply municipal water from an area that has an over supply. A good amount is also distilled and some amount of the salts/minerals added back. Just saying; not judging. Good tap filter might be way cheaper. Also, depending on where one lives, you can get the local 'analysis' of your water from your municipality.

Any merchant can charge whatever they want on Amazon. That being said, in a Costco warehouse, a 40 pack of 16.9 ounce bottles is like $4 or something.

IKEA stuff is also often sold by Marketplace sellers at inflated pricing.

But it only has around 50 stores in the U.S. And some items are either discontinued, or hard to find in certain colors, so there are few alternatives.

Costco had more than 10x as many stores, and bottled water isn't exactly something for which there are no readily available substitutes.

Yet, there are apparently enough people willing to pay those prices, and sustain that market.

I don't think I've ever found food/drink on Amazon that wasn't overpriced. Even bulk stuff you could buy the normal size in a store and pay less
