Is there a way to change the black background on the iPod Touch?

If I change the 'wallpaper' in settings it changes the screen savers background, but is there a way to change the black main menu background that we are forced to stare at all the time?

I just can't take having a black screen as my background :(

You can't at present, surprised me as well, I expect this maybe enabled in a future firmware update

This is what, I am waiting for, it's awful I know but hopefully it will be in the next firmware, which I hope is soon.

Thanks guys. I guess it does make sense that it will be available in a firmware update sometime in the future. Until then.

I guess apple wanted to make sure everyone has the same look to their touch, at least for a bit. Then once it is an establised device, we can do what we want!

I think the black background is a wonderful feature on the iPod Touch (or iPhone) It goes back to a classic consumer choice model brought forth by Henry Ford's Model T, “You can have any color you want as long as it’s black.”

google iPhone wallpapers really good quality stuff on most sites. I did not like the black either that is why I jailbroke it. Summerboard is well worth it. But to each his own.

Just jailbreak it then install summerboard, you can have whatever backgound you want then, and whatever icons.

custom background and icons would be nice in official Apple software, I could get rid of the useless (to me) calculator and Contacts

it's very easy to jaulbreak your touch and install all the themes, icons and wallpapers you want

do beware that a non-black background use more batt power.

You seriously want to be able to put a picture behind all those buttons? With a busy image and then those colored buttons on top it would look like an iPod Touch MySpace page. Or a Zune...
I like it black, but that's just me.

Apple to consumer: "You'll take the black background on your iPod Touch and you'll like it!"

Lmao! I was going to use that in my signature but I dont have enough space! (You can take your 150 charictors and ***************** :D)

Lmao once again! :D

I did have my own background on my Touch but it looked very messy and the wallpaper dim crashes my iPod every few minutes (on SummerBoard).

A bit off-topic: did anyone else notice that in the new version of SummerBoard the "Solid Menu Bar" option has disappeared?

I've got a jailbroken iPod touch and spent a while with various background images but, in all honesty, they just tend to be distracting and they reduce the legibility of the screen. I've since gone back to black.

So to speak.

Summerboard made my touch very unreliable. I've tried twice, and every time I uninstall Summerboard, the glitches go away. It's still jail broke, but runs perfectly. Also, having gotten used to a jail broked touch and all the extra apps, I could never go back to a plain jane 'touch'.

This is mine, and it's not distracting at all :)

If you are referring to the study that was made for CRT computer screens (which brought along the black google page), yes.

But for LCD and phone displays wether your background is black or any other color, the same amount of light is being projected. It's the crystals that render the colors red/green/blue, and thus black.

That's why the contrast between black and white isn't as good (it has gotten better though) as old crt screens and old tvs. You never get true black if light is being projected beneath it.

So no, you're not using more battery power with a light color background. You're still using the same amount of light, the black background just blocks it from displaying.
