[please help]airplay streaming knocks router to s***t

at an increasingly often rate, streaming on airplay will totally make the apple tv and router flip out, then the router crashes, connections go dead for 15 minutes and after that won't accept the wifi password, and eventually i automatically connect like nothing happened
is this common? what can i do to fix it? etc yadayadabingbadaboom
