I was using it today like normal when the screen suddenly flashed to black and froze. I restarted. I get to login enter password and it boots to about 50% than goes to a blank grey screen and restarts. Rinse and repeat. When I try to use bootcamp it sends me directly into Windows is diagnosing your Oc cannot start, restart and try again. So I'm inclined it's a hardware issue.

My question is could this be the HDD or something else. Before I start throwing money at it or if I should buy a new one.

Are they replacing them or are they fixing them?
Yes, apple has a repair program for that model (and others) that have a known GPU issue. You'll get a refurbished logic board (not a new one), but that should buy you some time.
