I have been trying to fix my friends 2009 MacBook Pro however it appears OS X has been completely deleted and the Macintosh HD drive has been wiped - meaning I can only access OS X Utilities in recovery mode. (It was like that when I received it).

There is no internet recovery mode on the 2009 MacBook Pro - so please dont suggest that.

I have tried these options:
  • Booting from multiple OS X installation USBs, none of which appear in the startup list (I have tried USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, resetting the pram etc, still doesnt appear in the startup list)
  • Using the "Reinstall OS X" option in the utilities menu, which gives me an error stating "This item is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later" (I have tried changing the date using terminal, and also using the same icloud account that the mac was originally set up with - still doesnt work).

When you use the USB drives, are you sure they are bootable? Will they boot on another Mac? Have you tried different ports? On my 2008 MacBook, it will only boot from USB on the rear USB port, and not the fore port.
