Ok, so i feel so lame. I just bought this jail broken iphone 3gs a few days ago. The guy I bought it from said that i shouldn't let the battery life run out or it might mess up the phone. Ok, so my wife was on the phone and it ran out of battery. Now, the phone is stuck on the apple screen, but can go into recovery mode, and the itunes/usb screen. I know that it had 4.2.1 firmware, but not sure what broadband. I am trying to figure out what program the guy used, and I am not sure whether it was tethered or not. When I bought the phone, I didn't know much about all of this (as you can tell) but I have tried youtube videos for about 2 days now and nothing works. please help me!

Yes, he told you not to let the battery die completely or turn it off cause it has a tethered JB.
You need to download redsnow and select just boot tethered.
And also the 4.2.1 ipsw for your device.

does the version of redsn0w matter?

Try running it as admin in compatibility mode as windows xp.
And follow the onscreen instructions.

When I jailbroke my iPad, I used a version that was listed as "for Windows". I didn't know where any compatability mode settings would have been if I wanted to change them.

Edit: Scratch that. I saw the blog showing that compatabilty mode is for Windows 7 users. I'm still using Windows XP, so I guess it's always compatible. :p
