using 10.4 on iBook G4.

was deleting emails and the finder started opening the window 'df iBook G4' window repeatedly, then closing and re-start the finder. it's constant. osx hasn't frozen (i'm posting using the laptop, although it's hard work and slow). i've restarted.

i am stuck. any suggestions other than a complete re-install welcome. i remember on my old iMac there was a re-start that you help down certain keys and it would chime (3 times) then it re-set something internally. can anyone remember how to do it..... do you think it's worth a try...?

if it helps

the CPU is showing 55% looking after a task called 'crashdump'......

It's called zapping the PRAM, and I do't think it would help. But it won't HURT anything to try it.

Restart and hold down Apple-Option-P-R

Sounds to me like your Finder is crashing. Over and over and over.

You should trash your Finder prefs, do you have another user you could log in as?

logged in as different user

and the finder is stable. you're right, the finder keeps crashing.

any idea's what to do...? i tried looking for Finder prefferences, but couldn't find a file by that name. ....

anyone else experience this..?

Log in as the other user.. hopefully it's an admin?

What you need to remove is /Users/broken_user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Finder.plist.
