Dear Forum,

I am a new to the world of networking-solutions... therefore need your help.

I would like to get a NAS solution which allows for:
-automatic backups of my wordpress site
-backups of multiple MacBooks
-Access to the iTunes-library via the internet from any place (Is that even possible?) My MacBook has not enough storage and I refuse to live a dongle-life. Also it would be nice to finally not worry too much about backing up my beloved music library all the time.
-ideally an option for swapping the HD
-mirroring of the stored data (RAID?)

Looking forward to hear about your suggestions. Kind regards

- Automatic backups of your Wordpress site would be based on a script running on your web and/or database server(s). Do you host the site in-house? Otherwise you will need to open up a hole for sftp or scp to your NAS in your firewall.
- Backups of MacBooks: I think most Linux based NAS boxes are able to support this feature.
- Access to the iTunes library over the Internet: I don't think this will work, afaik. You'd have to use some other playback mechanism to access the files. Presenting that to the Internet opens up another can of worms. Not that it's impossible, you'll just have to think a bit about what you're doing.
- Swapping a HD in a NAS can be done in real-time, if you run a mirroring or parity-based storage schema (the most common being RAID1, RAID10, RAID5 and RAID6). Just make sure you know what you're doing if pulling several drives at once...
Note that RAID and backup are two separate things. RAID will make sure your mistakes are evenly spread across your drives and are highly available. :)
