Please help me get ichat to work

I really need help. We've got two macs. We've got two .mac accounts (one full, one trial). All we want to do is use iChat to talk to each other.

When we go through the initial setup steps in ichat, all seems fine but connecting to AIM always fails (timed out).

If someone could give me some step by step instructions to get me started I would be very grateful.
