Your backups are in C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

iOS5 will be wonderful for you. It automatically backs up your contacts to iCloud so this kind of thing wont happen to you. Not coming until Sept unfortunately.

you must use StealthGenie to backup your contact or other cell phone data.
