Please help me troubleshoot - Trying to update old watch that’s been in a drawer for years.

I have an original Appe Watch. Im not certain which OS is on it, but I am guessing OS 2.

When I purchased the Apple Watch Series 2, I unpaired my original Apple Watch and it’s been sitting in a drawer since.

I now want prepare the original Apple Watch for someone else’s use. So far I have erased the Apple Watch. When I try to pair the Apple Watch, I do the following:

Ensure watch is fully charged and is currently on charging cable.
Select “English” for language on the watch
Select “United States” for region on the watch
Select “Start Pairing” on watch
Open the Watch app on my iPhone (7+ running latest iOS)
Select “Pair New Watch” in the Watch app.
Use camera capture watchsc4een to initiate sync.

At this point, I am prompted with the following “Update Your Apple Watch. To finish pairing, your Apple Watch must be running the latest version of watchOS”

I select “Update Now”.

It looks for the Update and prompts me to Download and Install. I select “Download and Install” then I am prompted to enter my passcode. I enter the passcode. I then agree to the Terms and Conditions.

It starts Download, but then it immediately pauses. The message says “You can resume the Download when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network”.

Problem is...I AM connected to Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting steps taken so far:
Full power cycling both devices and trying again.
Trying a different WiFi network (I was on a 5G network, so I tried a 2.4G network in case the original Apple Watch could communicate on 5G)
Tried changing my network SSID to what I think it might have been back when the last time I used the watch in case that was why it thought I wasn’t connected to WiFi.

I am open to any other suggestions to try to get my old watch updated and paired. I appreciate the assistance.
 
The answer lies in your description. None of the watches support 5G Wi-Fi networks. You will need to use a 2.4 Wi-Fi network. Make sure that your iPhone is also connect to the same SSID and using 2.4 vs 5G.

Then let us know it works gets you further along.

I tried already using a 2.4 network, but it did again just to double check. It’s still doing the exact same thing. Thanks though...
 
I've seen that message frequently when doing updates:

"It starts Download, but then it immediately pauses. The message says “You can resume the Download when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network”."

I think it often happens when Apple's servers are busy, or it's a bug. Waiting generally resolves it for me. Also, keeping the iPhone Watch app awake seems to help it start again. Leaving it overnight at that stage is the least stressful way to make sure it completes, as otherwise I tend to check it often and assume it'll never finish...

I don't believe you need to be on 2.4G for this, as the download occurs to your iPhone and then is transferred to the Watch (which can occur over bluetooth.) However, it will be faster if the phone can transfer the download over 2.4G to the watch.

To bad it's not fixed in iOS 11. I've noticed it at least 2 or 3 times in prior versions of iOS.
 
Ok....I’ve started the routine again. I’ve left both the phone and the watch plugged in and turned off screen lock on the phone. I guess I’ll know in the morning if it worked.

I woke up this morning and your idea of just leaving it overnight did the trick. Thanks!
