As much as I would like to use Photos a single place to work with my photo images, in reality I find myself resorting to Finder just because I have never been able to get Photos to work the way I want it to.
I think it is time to change that and maybe you can help me with some of the basics.

At the moment the Photos library is simply referencing my images from their original location.
I have been reluctant to store the original files directly in the Photos library because A: I would lose the ability to locate any given image using Finder and B: i am worried about how all the different file formats would be treated by Photos (different types of RAW, etc...)

The main problems with this approach are:
- if/when I need to move folders around and/or to a new disk, all of the references are broken,
- Photos will not automatically add to the library any new image I add to one of the referenced folders (and this is a major PITA).

Any suggestions?

Actually, I have just discovered that Photos is much better behaved than I thought it would be.
By re-importing one of the top level folders it has actually imported only the new images instead of refreshing the lot as I feared it would do.
I was reluctant to try this as I have many thousands images in these folders.
Shame it won't do that automatically.
