Please help me

I just bought a white 16gb Iphone, to be honest, I'm not sure if it's 3g or 3gs. But it's stuck in recovery mode, only when I plug it in the usb to itunes screen comes up. That's all I'm able to see. I'm unable to put it in dfu mode, when I try nothing happens. when I try to restore it it get's about 75% of the way through and then stops with the error (1) message. I'm sure I can get the log if needed. Is there any way of making use of this I phone or did i waste my money?

make sure you update it to the latest IOS version.currently the latest version for iphone 3gs is ios 5.1.1.hope this helps.

To exit Recovery Mode: Hold down the home and power button for about 15 seconds (until the iPhone shuts off), wait a few seconds, the press the power button to boot the iPhone
