I just got a iphone3 g with 4.0.1. All i want to use it for is as an ipod...I can't use att where i live.

I would like to restore back to 3.1.2 if at all possible and JB it after. But for now i would just like it to let me use it as is. when I turn it on it keeps telling me to insert simcard wich I do not have. Please help me out.

I tried to shift restore and restore it to a custome firmware but i keep getting the error 1604.
