please help my ipod is doing somersaults!

here's a challenge: my ex-boyfriend thought he would be really (stupidly) clever and download an itunes off the internet to put some music onto my ipod which already has its own itunes on another computer they are both windows xp but i now cannot either delete by selection any of the music on my ipod OR update with new music from my itunes.......the music is on the file but not in the ipod itself......please help before i do something horrible to the ex for being such an idiot.......pretty please
