Hello, i won an auction for an sealed iphone 3gs 16gb for my best friend and i MUST have it unlocked & jailbroken. Only i don't think it can be :( because i believe it has the new bootrom that i've been reading conflicting information about on the possibliity of the jailbreak & unlock. I DO NOT want a tethered jailbreak unlock...

Here are the details:
Serial #: 84005q2xxxx

model #: MC135ll/a

Please help me as i would prefer to use redsn0w and ultrasn0w to jailbreak and unlock and not blackra1n. Can i downgrade something:confused::confused:

why don't you want to use blackra1n? it worked fine for my 3gs.

What firmware 3GS are you running.
If its 3.1.3 you cant JB or unlock it at all.
Downgrading is not an option either.
If you're on 3.1.2 you can but you're stuck with a tethered JB.

Me neither the seller is sure of the firmware because it is still sealed. I thought u guys might have been able to tell the firmware version by the information I provided...:(

Well, if you really think about it, no matter what software you put on your iPhone, your SERIAL NUMBER and MODEL NUMBER will never change.

Does that make sense? We'll need you to tell us what the actual FIRMWARE number is, (i.e. 3.1.2 or 3.1.3) to give you a proper answer. Please post that and I'm sure someone here would be of help.

Oh I see.
From the looks of the serial number you will be stuck with a tethered JB and good chances are it hasnt been updated to 3.1.3 so you should be able to JB and unlock it.
Just make sure when you plug it to itunes and it asks you if you want to update to the latest firmware 3.1.3 you hit NO or cancell.

...I have a non-MC model (it's an MB) and the firmware is 05.12.01; I wanted to downgrade to 3.1.2 and then jailbreak from there (don't need to unlock because I'm with AT&T) ...still can't do it??

oh ...and I've never jailbroken before

That serial number severally confuses what I know about determining build date, plug the full serial here and report back http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html.

Most important - Remove the serial number from the above post.

You have received some non-important suggestions from some who just do not understand.

First, you have the new bootrom, so if it is jailbreakable, it will be a tethered jailbreak. Unlock is not dependent on bootrom, no such thing as tethered unlock.

Second, we must know the firmware version to tell you if it can be jailbroken or unlocked.

Third, do not update to 3.1.3 firmware.

THANK YOU FOR THE SERIAL NUMBER TIP! So u mean to tell me that I will have to purchase it and activate it on AT&T before I can jailbreak and unlock it to see the firmware number and use it on my carrier ???

Note: you said there is no such thing as a tethered unlock...well all I want to do is unlock it...I don't care about the jailbreak part because I do not use it. Can I just simply unlock???

I would have thought you knew that to unlock, you must jailbreak first as I have seen posts here before from you (has been a while)

Can't you find a friend with an AT&T sim and borrow it for 10 seconds ? Put in in, hook up to iTunes, activate and then pull sim out.

No need to buy an AT&T contract.

And again, if it's 3.1.2 firmware, you can jailbreak and unlock. Don't update to 3.1.3 or you cannot do either.

Yeah I have unlocked and jailbroke my iPhone 3G with no problem but this 3gs one is quite confusing and seems more difficult. So if the phone comes with 3.1.3 can it still be jailbroken and unlocked??

HELP:eek:

since it is an "mc" model, you cannot jailbreak it yet. i have been trying to find a jb for mine, but i have yet to find one for the mc model.

Hi, a quick question.
I put my details in just to see more about my iphone 3gs 32gb and it says its 620MHz I thought it was only 600MHz?

Cheers,

Jared

Why is everyone going on about model numbers (MC vs MB)? All the model number indicates is whether your phone is a 3G or 3GS. All 3GSes have the MC model prefix, and whether they can be jailbroken depends on their bootrom and firmware, not model number.
