PLEASE HELP NEWBIE itunes won't import/eject

I have selected 'on cd insert: import and eject'
on my iTunes preferences

It has worked for 100s of cds but now needs to be manually imported and ejected.

I've logged out and rebooted but this does not fix the problem.

What's up?
