iPod touch please help on mail app!!!!!!!!!!!!

so when I started using the mail app on my iPod touch2g it worked fine but now for some reason when I try to send mail to one of my friend on a iphone it takes forever and once it's done it says something about the smtp or something like that and then it says in quotations SMTP.gmail.com and then that's it and can't respond back to any messeges and I'm using my gmail account. Somebody help me please HELP!!!!! ;mad:
