My system log shows:

com.apple.launchd.peruser.501: (com.hitachigst.backup.agent[493]) Bug: launchd_core_logic.c:4782 (26200):2

every ten seconds or so and I have no idea how to remove it.

Open Terminal and paste in the following commands one at a time and hit enter after each one. That will delete the Hitachi backup launch agent. I am assuming here you don't want to run the Hitachi software any longer.

Code:
rm /Library/LaunchAgents/com.hitachigst.backup.agent.plist

Code:
rm ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.hitachigst.backup.agent.plist

I am quite positive you have that software, if so and you don;t need it this is what you should do, from web site:

How do I uninstall the Q21 Hitachi backup?

Macintosh
Open the application folder, and then drag it to the trash Hitachi backup.
The ~ / Library / LaunchAgents / com.hitachigst.backup.agent.plist file and then delete the ~ / Library / Application Support / HitachiGST / Hitachi Backup / folder and delete the ~ / Library / Application Support / HitachiGST / LSBackground / folder and then restart the computer to remove the ~ / Library / Logs / LSBackup.log file and delete
