I took my iPhone 8 out of the box, put it in DFU mode and tried to update it to iOS 11.1.2 (to match the iOS version of the iPhone 5S I'm going to restore into it). The update failed with the "unknown error (9)" and now it doesn't boot, it just shows the "connect to iTunes" image. My MacBook Pro 2011 has no problems with the USB port and the Lightning cable is new. iTunes version is current too.

Did this happen because I didn't go thru the activation process?

Fixed. I was using a new Lightning cable, just not the one that came in the box. Used it and it went thru the restore process without a hitch.
