What to buy? At this time, I already have a 13" MacBook Pro. If I get the 27" Display, are there any negatives to keeping the MacBook Pro plugged into the power for a few days at a time?

i have seen mixed debate on this
my friend has a 08 blackbook has always been plugged in to power source external screen keyboard set up. No issues everything runs fine, but he had battery swelling new replacement for free.

Another friend
same thing no swelling.

I would think there would be no issue at all, especially since it should be just like leaving it powered by your regular outlet, and since its an Apple Display I would simply think it'd be no issue.

All new laptops from apple use Li-Po batteries which have their own power controller built in so leaving the battery plugged in for long periods of time won't do any harm.

The only possible way to harm your battery is to not use it for months at a time. As long as you cycle the battery every once in a while it will be fine.
