With the release of thunderbolt, i am interested in selling my 2010 iMac and 2010 Macbook air, and upgrading for thunderbolt. I have a 2011 Macbook pro, so I *could* hook up all three. I transfer 50-60 gig iphoto and Aperture libraries back and forth thru firewire 800 right now, so would this be the answer to my prayers? Right now it takes 45-50 mins with target disk mode and firewire 800. This is fine with me, but the thought of 20 mins or less transfers sound awesome. The Air transfer downright sucks with the USB etherdongle, but I knew that going in. I just have to plan very carefully and set it up for an overnight transfer. How long should a 60 gig file take over thunderbolt? I know 10gpbs is B.S. theoretical speed, hard drives cannot go that fast. I have always understood that;
FW 800>GigE>FW 400>USB 2.0. Once I noticed that a 30 gig transfer only took 11 minutes over Gig E, while it normally takes 20+ over FW 800. What happened there? I am no professional, but I like entertaining this idea if it truly is superfast. Help!
