HI, Can someone PLEASE tell me.. I have the M1 MacBook Pro and I can currently mirror my desktop over to my LG tv thru the built in tv software BUT at only 1080p which is no good for my needs. The question I have is if I buy the new 4K Apple TV and connect it to the tv..Can I then mirror at 4K or at least the same resolution as the MacBook? I can't find the answer anywhere!! So what I I need to know is the max resolution of mirroring. Thanks Phill

I think the maximum resolution for mirroring via Airplay is 1920 x 1080 regardless of which device you mirror to.

Yes I do have the ATV 4K 2017 and an old MacBook Pro from 2014, but I’m not going to experiment with Airplay. Airplay pretty much sucks. I looked up “maximum resolution for airplay” on the internet and everything I saw said the same thing: Maximum mirroring resolution for Airplay is 1080. They mentioned some non-mirroring possibilities, but I didn’t delve into it. Supposedly you can use iTunes or QuickTime to get higher resolutions via non-mirroring methods.

I can tell you that using my iPad Air 2020 to mirror via Airplay is garbage. The mirrored screen is pillar-boxed, and the resolution is low at 1080, and it looks like the crap you would have expected from 10 years ago, even on my 4K Sony Bravia which does well at upconverting. The colors looked crappy too even though the images were in Display P3. Apple simply doesn’t give a poop any more.

Hi, Thanks for the response :) I have actually found it to be really good on my 4k tv buts its not good enough for displaying what I need. I still need someone to test it out for me :-(

For various contents like videos, you can get up to 4K since tvOS 14 but not sure for mirroring Mac.

4K video sharing With AirPlay, you can share your 4K videos from the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV 4K in full resolution. See Use AirPlay to stream audio and video on Apple TV.

You can get more than 1080P, however the quality seems terrible on my Sony tv, If you can I'd recommend connecting via HDMI instead.
