So I have a spare mid-2009 MBP 15in that's running El Capitan right now.

I want to do a fresh install of either Sierra or High Sierra. I know I need to use some patch to make it work.

can someone please share their experiences with the OS + hardware combo? I've read there can be Wi-Fi isues but 5,3 wasn't listed in the affected models.

Thanks a lot

Hey, I have a 13" mid-2009 MBP and am running Sierra, which I installed using the patch (there is a thread on this forum that explains exactly how to do it ... it's pretty straightforward).

Sierra is running beautifully on this MBP. Everything works fine. Shouldn't be a problem for you, either.

Good luck !

If the old MBP is running fine as is, I wouldn't bother.
It will gain nothing from the "upgrade"...

I run High Sierra on my 15” mid 2009. it has 8GB ram and a 500GB SSD. It works quite good. I just get some kernel panics when waking from deep sleep... so I just shut down my MacBook instead of closing the lid.

Nevertheless, I will buy a 2018 as soon as it surfaces. My mid 2009 just doesn’t feel like a good machine anymore.

EDIT: I would like to add that I need Xcode occasionally. Therefore I needed to upgrade to a OS newer then supported by my MacBook.
