I'm looking for a video player for local MKV files on my laptop, but one that has a Plex-like interfaces that organizes my media and downloads matched metadata. VLC doesn't do this. Is there any software that does, but is for playing local and not streaming files?

That would be Kodi (former XBMC).
The video files themselves can of course be on a network drive but all the metadata grabbing is performed on your laptop.

I think Plex should work for what you are trying to do, but you need to configure it for offline, local playing.

Rather than Plex, Infuse is probably your best bet.

that actually works really well, thanks. exactly what I was looking for.

only drawback is it won't play files with Dolby Digital audio, unless you upgrade to a paid subscription.
