Is thier something simmiler to plublisher but for the mac? I have gimp but it's not the trick.
 
could the ms files be converterd somehow?

No, Publisher is a proprietary file format.

If you have access to Publisher and the original files, you can export to PDF, but that is largely uneditable. Otherwise, its down to extracting the individual text and graphic elements and rebuilding in something else.
