I tried connecting my cMBP to a 1080 monitor with a displayport to hdmi adapter. Unfortunately the edges disappear including the top bar. The mouse will go there but I can't see it. Is there anyway to fix this?

This doesn't happen when I connect the cMBP to a smaller monitor with a displayport to DVI adapter.

Won't this dull the image?

No, you are misunderstanding what overscan is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan

I have only ever connected a Mac Mini to a TV, so I'm not 100% sure if a MBP has the overscan setting - if you have the overscan slider that's your solution.

HDMI never works as well as VGA, DVI or displayport for computer monitors, so if you can use a different connector that might work better.
