plugging in headphones and the shock of loud music

I love listening to music while im on the computer but every time i plug in my headphones the loud music is startling and it hurts my ears so i was wondering if there was a program or something to edit that lowers the volume when you plug in your head phones --kind of like how the ipod lowers its volume when you plug in your headphones-- that way it wont make me go deaf every time i plug in my head phones and get startled by loud music

Go to System Prefences->Sound->Output. Plug in your headphones and set the volume on the bottom; that should become the default volume.
