Plugging laptop into 27" cinema display? Why is this so difficult?

Could you do female mini DP to male regular DP, then adapt the male DP to a female HDMI? Not quite as cheap but I think it would work. Female miniDP to male regular DP here https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Female-Adapter/dp/B014DV2RGG

Also... why is this seemingly the only way to do it? Why doesn't a mini DP female to HDMI adapter exist? My mind is blown right now.

I can't say for sure. But at least on Amazon it's easy to return (when there isn't a global pandemic).
I guess. Times like this I really don't miss Apple hardware. Wife just wants to use her monitor with her work computer during work from home. Apple can't just let her do that though.
To be fair it is a 9 year old display using a very uncommon port and intended for use with other Apple hardware. You can't expect any manufacturer to cover all the bases. Hell I just had to buy an HDMI to DP adapter because HP threw DP on some laptops and HDMI on others regardless of device class.
