Tried to JB my iPhone 4 from iOS 4.1, but it wouldn't work because I was using Lion SP2. I tried again and I kept getting the same error message. Now my phone is not working. I went into iTunes to update and I keep getting this error message.
Please can anyone help.

'iPhone has been detected in recovery mode' is the message I keep getting.

Have you tried a pressing the lock and home button at the same time and holding them down for a few seconds? Should reset the device

Yeah, I've tried that - still not working
I've tried on two different computers as well - Mac and PC at work, still no luck.

wait what's lion sp2????

Developer version of Lion.

'DO NOT restore to a stock fw' - what does that mean, whats stock 'fw'

I cant follow the instructions if the phone doesnt even switch on. I keep getting the connect to itunes image on the phone.

You're kidding, right? It's the pre-release code for the next version of OSX and it's mind boggling that anyone would try jailbreaking using it. How many variables can you toss into the mix and still reasonably expect success? Might as well toss in a pre-release copy of Parallels running a pre-release version of Windows 8.

just use a stable os version like snow leopard and follow the tutorial link i gave u .

stock firmware is the original firmware that apple provides
and it does not matter if u are stuck in recovery mode because pwnage tool will make u put ur device in DFU mode before u restore
u are required to create a custom firmware using the pwnage tool and restore to that CUSTOM fw in itunes .

Yes, I know it was a stupid mistake. I wasn't thinking.

How do I prevent it from restoring it to Stock FW? Basically any update and restore is not working.

the tutorial is quite detailed and complete, it has everything u'll need.

and to ans your question :
be sure to select the newly created custom .ipsw file instead of the one u downloaded from apple servers when u restore in itunes.

Right, Ill give it a bash.
First thing would be to get this dreaded Lion off my Mac!

When you say custom .ipsw file, Im presuming this the FW I downloaded from iClarified.com?
