FW800 single 1Ghz, if the third slot is the only populated one then it works fine. The third slot won't work if anything else is populated. The sticks are 2 512s and 2 256s and work fine in my other dual 867 MDD. Any ideas to attempt to fix this?

Have a feeling your MLB/dimm slot is at fault when handling multiple dimms.

Is the machine dusty inside? Have you tried using compressed air to clear the inside?

Suspect it was dust, blew it all out and put the RAM in 1 by 1 starting from slot 1 onwards, booting, checking About This Mac, shutting down, add another stick and it now works fine.
