Hi all,

I've been trying to get all aspects of my account set up, but i am having one problem. The site is not letting me PM with other people! I have all the specified requirements that are in the FAQ page but it still won't let me!

Any ideas?

You would do well to take some time to read the Forum Rules and the Forum FAQ:

Before you can send a Private Message or email to another forum member, these conditions must apply:

You must have a post count of at least 5, as shown in your user profile.
You must have been a forum member at least one day.
The recipient must have enabled receipt of Private Messages or email in their User Options. The options are named "Enable Private Messaging" and "Receive Email from Other Members".

If you read his post he said he had checked the FAQ and he meets all requirements.
I read his post. I also checked his posts, and saw he just reached the minimum 5 posts required to PM only minutes ago. It takes a few minutes for the forum to update.

Cant send private messages

Hello,

I am new on this fourm and i am not able to send private messages is there a reason for this?

Maybe a new condition needs to be added to all of these benefits saying that you must have had 5/100/250/500 posts for 24 hours to get the right to the thing you get for that many posts.

I'm actually confused what you're trying to say…

Thank You All

Hey everyone..... Thanks for helping me out. My PM works now

Once you reach the milestone, you have to wait 24 hrs to get the Avatar/forum access, ect. Not sure what 24 hrs will accomplish.

Stopping some whiny posts (and PM's to mods) from members who want an avatar 5 seconds after their 500th post and who just need to be a little patient for the system to catch up.

Plus it gives the forums enough of a cushion to adequately handle a growing number of members who qualify for various forum privileges.

The 24 hour rule sounds like a good one, and I think it would definitely help smooth things over and make things easier for the mods.

Except that vBulletin has no capability to do this. :)

There is a script that checks for "promotion" criteria once an hour, and if a member has become eligible for something in the past hour, they get those permissions immediately. There's no provision for having the system wait some period of time after meeting other criteria before giving them the permissions.

Ahh the eternal difficulties of software limitations! :p

In other words the maximum wait time is 1 hour right?

In which case, the "24 hour rule" could effectively be called the "1 hour rule." :p

Mmmmm, no, because the various servers would still have to play catch-up.

A couple of hours should do it. If anyone is too anxious of that short a wait, well ..... with them. :p

Sort of. For the actual promotion to occur, yes the max wait should be an hour. But for avatars showing up next to posts, that's a different script that runs less frequently, as many people know.

So we do prefer that people wait 24 hours before contacting us about permissions problems just to make sure that every script that might affect their permissions has been run. :)

Vb doesn't need to wait. The rule is just to cover the forum taking it's time ;)

Ah, I thought by "condition" you were referring to an actual setting that would delay promotion.

The issue of delays in Marktetplace and avatar privileges is already covered in the relevant sections of the FAQ.

I was going to say that the avatar stuff not showing up immediately is covered in the FAQs.

The script that activates it should run once an hour. I believe the next scheduled run is within the next 5-10 minutes, so hang in there. :)
