PMG5… what bay for 1 HDD?

I’m swapping in a new 1TB HDD in my G5 where there used to be 2 40GB HDDs.

For now, I’d like to only use the 1. Would I put this in A or B? The iFixit shows it coming out of B but I want to be sure before I put it all together and start installing OS X.

It doesn't matter.

However, most people put it in the top bay.

In case anyone is curious. I put it in the top bay but the Leopard Installer isn’t detecting the HDD in Disk Utility.

I’m looking on Google but I can’t find anything. I’ve tried with both SATA ports inside the G5.

I also can’t find the power cord to the AirPort Extreme I was hoping to use to get this online.

G5s are very picky about SATA drive types, mainly SATA 1. You can use SATA 2 or SATA 3 drives, but you need to jumper them down. Assuming your drive has jumpers, look up the settings at the manufacturer website. If you don't have jumpers and it's a SATA 2 or 3 drive then you're out of luck.

Hmm. I bought this drive years ago and I’m almost certain I purposefully bought it for this G5 with SATA 1 in mind. I’ll definitely look in to it.

I plugged in the original (don’t think it was Apple) 40 GB in slot B and Disk Utility saw both. I formatted slot A’s 1TB drive and started the Leopard install. 3 times the screen darkened with a messaging saying I needed to reboot my computer. I didn’t have time tonight to troubleshoot but it could be the RAM (5.5 GB installed) or the unjumped HDD.

Jumper.

Now I’m trying to use an older AirPort Extreme as a wireless adapter for it.
