Hello folks,

I handed down my mid-2011 iMac to my mother last year. Before I did, I noticed it was having some issues with wi-fi. Namely, it would drop the wireless connection, then refuse to see any wireless network in the area (I’d power cycle the wireless connection and it would see nothing after it was turned back on; oddly, restarting the Mac seemed to restore connectivity). Before I gave her the iMac, I erased the drive and reinstalled macOS; she’s now running High Sierra, so I’m fairly certain I’m dealing with a hardware issue.

Easiest fix would appear to be a USB wireless adapter, but finding one that works with High Sierra is proving difficult. I ended up buying a TP-Link Archer T2U, and it took some work to get it installed (had to disable system integrity protection since TP-Link didn’t sign their driver), and, even then, it’s an inelegant solution (which is a diplomatic way of saying the software sucks out loud). The other bummer is, with the way the driver works, it completely kills Location Services since I’ve turned off the built in wireless.

Is there any simple plug-and-play solution that plays nicely with High Sierra? Wired and powerline networking are out due to powerline being ridiculously unreliable in her home. Or perhaps I’m barking up the wrong tree, and there’s another fix someone can think of?

Thanks!
