Hi all!

based on my poor battery life I was trying to eliminate some 3rd party app (they haven’t been updated yet so it makes it an easier decision).

For podcasts I have a few questions:

1. what does the little cloud icon mean on the large cover art on the Apple Watch app?

2. is anyone else having trouble getting episodes to sync on Apple Watch

3. can you stream episodes?

4. Does the episodes have to be downloaded onto the iPhone to get it on the Apple Watch?

5. is there any way to manually sync an episode

7. The stations I’ve set up in podcasts don’t seem in sync with the Watch, are yours?

8. I’m coming from Overcast, but until he updates the Watch app I may have to use something else. Other than Apple’s, what is the current best podcast app on Watch

Thank you.

no one uses podcasts?

I also use Overcast and since the iOS 13 update, the podcast app is broken. I find that episodes sometimes don't download, notifications are hours after an episode is released even with 1 hour polling.

1. The cloud icon indicates you have episodes on the iPhone but not downloaded to the watch. If you choose to play it, its done directly without using the iPhone download.

2. You can stream

3. Yes to download to the watch it must be downloaded to the iPhone. Sync happens only when the watch is on its charger

1. Mean the episode is available but not downloaded to the watch.
2. I don’t have any sync problem with my S3 and watchOS 5.
3.Yes, if you’re on WiFi, or have cellular watch.
4. If your watch is not cellular version and you’re without WiFi, yes.
5. I’m not sure there is.

Thanks to everyone for your responses!

I’ve come to the conclusion that both Overcast and Podcasts are not working correctly. I can’t get the Podcasts to sync overnight.

I have the series 5 and I have not been able to sync Apple podcast app to the the Apple podcast watch app. I have never been able to. I got overcast (it’s add supported) on both devices and it works 100%. Podcast sync to watch with no issues. The developer is well known and respected so good for him. The ads are tiny and doesn’t jump out and detract for the experience so I support type developer.

Although I have issues with the Apple podcast app, download/sync to my S4 watch is not one of them. I set the Podcast setting in the watch app on my iPhone for Listen Now and not the Custom setting. Once I place my watch in its charger the sync completes within a few minutes. I usually only sync 1 episode each to the watch. Overcast does work very well but I do like Apple's app because I can continue listening on my Mac in iTunes because it syncs via AppleID.

I sure hope Apple can get their act together and fix these issues. I submit a feedback at least twice per week.

Is there no way to manually get a podcast to download to the watch using the native podcast app? I don’t see any consistency between which podcasts have the cloud next to them and which do not.

Unlike Overcast you must have the watch on the charger to download to the watch from the podcast app.

That’s the thing ... I charge it every night and I still have clouds ha and I know for a fact I have plenty of storage on the watch itself. Just seems like a crapshoot.

But I guess I should give overcast a try.

It’s bugs in the app. I was like you wondering if I was doing something wrong but it turns out nope. It’s not me.

I think it just dawned on me that I’ve been doing this wrong the whole time. I usually go into Library to play a podcast on the watch but turns out that wasn’t the right way after all...

It’s funny because I usually disregard the podcast artwork when first opening the app haha

Turned off cellular and WiFi on my watch and Bluetooth on my phone and it seems to be working now ...

One thing I found is on the Apple podcast app, in order to get episodes to the watch (either for streaming with the cloud icon or downloaded), the watch app on the iPhone has to have either listen now or custom set. And because I use custom, some podcasts are set to not download.

Mostly I do the streaming via wifi (cloud icon) for episodes when working around or outside my house where wifi coverage is good. Then I leave my phone on my dresser.

on Overcast 3 of 4 times on watchOS 6 I have to kill and relaunch the app to have the transferred episodes show. Is that the same for you?

No it’s works well. I’m having other iOS 13 issues. I’ll post about it. Watch os has been working for me.

I decided to go back to the stock podcast app now that macOS Catalina has a standalone podcast app. We shall see how a few days goes with downloads and notifications. One thing I hate is the time remaining wheel. I can never be sure how much exactly is left without looking at my iPhone. Overcast does use a time line remaining indicator. Come on Apple.....

Add me to the list of people whose podcast syncing stopped working after all my upgrades/updates. I got a iPhone 11 Pro Max but kept my watch series 4. I updated it to Watch OS6 at the same time. Now after all this I cant get my podcasts to go from my iPhone to my watch. Sometimes the podcast setting in the watch app on iPhone will say "please wait..." when usually you can actually see the progress of it uploading episodes. Very maddening. I have sent feedback to apple about it. Hopefully they fix it soon because where I run I have no cell service so if I cant upload I cant listen to anything.

Wow sounds like I could have written this comment..... except I have the XS Max. I continue to submit issues to Apple on the podcast app

Hm, well if you have an XS Max then its probably not my new phone, which is good to know. Obviously a problem with iOS 13 or Watch OS6. Hopefully will be fixed in the next software update. I have not received a response from Apple on my feedback report.

I am wondering if I could get any info on if they're working on it if I call the support number.

Or maybe both OS's - in any case I did talk with support 5 days ago and they said they would look into it. But I suspect they just referred it to the engineering team. It took that team 8 months to fix an Apple Music issues 2 years ago!
