I listen to a lot of podcasts and spend equal time driving and working outdoors. I start a pod using iphone through trucks speakers ,then hop out and work for an hour or two using earbuds then repeat.
I connect earbuds to apple watch 5 as I want to hear notifications through earbuds, but synced podcast doesn't resume from same position.
Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

It seems like the Watch app syncs with the phone at random times. It’s definitely not immediately. I like the podcasts app myself and don’t want to go third party. To avoid the issue, if I’m in the same situation, switching from watch to phone, I usually start another podcast in the second device and then continue playback on the first device when I am back to using it.

I’m not sure if it’s actually relates or not but I seem to have better luck with podcasts syncing if I leave the podcasts app open in the background on my mac

Great question, and I have been wondering as well. Regarding Overcast, curious if it syncs without human intervention? The promise for me at least with the OEM Podcast app is I don't have to screw with it, but as this thread makes clear, no such luck.

Yes it does. Not sure about when syncing starts but it does.
Good thing is that I can enforce it. Typically when I go for a run I want my favorite podcast on the watch. When it was released at night it is not on the watch yet. When I open both apps on iPhone and AW, sync starts immediately.
Sync of position though is magically done immediately.

Glad it helped.

One additional tip: when a podcast has synced and is not available on the watch afterwards, just terminate Overcast on the watch and restart (hold button until shutoff screen appears and then press crown).
