"Peridot," the latest game from augmented reality company Niantic, is now available for download from the App Store. A Tamagotchi-style game, Peridot allows users to choose a virtual pet to raise.

As with Niantic's other games, Peridot is an augmented reality title that encourages players to take their pets for walks in the real world. During walks, users can collect items, discover new places, and capture photos.

The game syncs with the Health app to allow players to earn walking distance even when the app is closed, and the augmented reality interface is quick and responsive, letting users tap a spot on the screen to direct their pet.

The Peridot or "Dot" is raised from birth, and players can pet, feed, and play with their Dots to help them grow. In addition to exploring places in the real world and uncovering items, there is a breeding mechanic that can unlock new Peridot archetypes. Raising a Peridot into an adult and leveling up unlocks new character traits that can be used for future pets.

Dots are modeled after existing animals and mythological creatures like cheetahs, dragons, unicorns, and more, with "infinite possibilities of Peridot archetypes" available.

Niantic first announced Peridot in April 2022, so it has been in development for over a year. The official launch date is May 9, but the game is available for download as of today. [Direct Link]

I can already tell this game isn't gonna last long with the absolute PR nightmare going on with Pokemon GO right now with #HearUsNiantic. If they ain't treating Pokemon GO players well, what makes them think people will flock to this?
POGO is also a very time consuming game. Most players also don't have the time to take on another Niantic game so they'd really need to attract users outside of POGO.

People have been hating on POGO since its release and it still made 703 million last year in 2022

There are some killer apps in development that will actually improve our day to day lives, making AR essential. This is just another example of eye candy with no compelling reason to own.

Eh. This game will fail like all the other non Pokémon Go games they've made. It'll last a few months to a year or two and then shut down, just like their Harry Potter game. Even without the current PR nightmare of how they're treating Pokémon Go players, it would still fail.

applied to be beta tester for cool games that I like but can never get in. apply to be beta tester for this and got accepted almost immediately
the thing with this is that its like a virtual pet that you take care but the problem is the phone heats up real quick so its not sustainable to have it on all the time to play with this virtual pet
not to mention its kinda lame to be playing with a virtual pet if you're older than 5 years old on a smart phone unless you have some sort of mental illness that regress your age back to single digit while your body is the age of double digits

UHG

More BS

When you take your pet for a walk, interact with you're pet, train your pet, not mess with some waste of time dumb game! Probably do same with your kids.

How are they treating Pokémon Go players?
On top of the usual 'every event goes wrong' issues we've come to expect from a company that can't seem to grasp the basic concept of beta testing, they have put the price of Remote Raid passes up by 95% overnight, which is causing many players to quit, destroys any hope rural players had of competing with city-based ones and makes the game unbearable for many disabled players. They have followed up this with an insulting fingers-in-ears 'la-la-la we can't hear you' response to thousands of negative comments about this policy and the way it's destroying the game and community.

Why is "Peridọt" written in purple? Peridot gemstones have the rare property of only occurring in one possible colour, and that colour certainly isn't purple! It's olive-green.
