So after doing a little digging it seems to be transparency causing poor battery life when using Yosemite so I switched this off and yes, my idle MBA battery remaining indicator went from 5 hrs with transparency on, back to 12 hrs with it off (as it was before with Mavericks).

So my question is this, is there a way to set transparency to be on when the laptop is plugged in and then off when it's running on battery without having to manually change it each time?

Transparency is a really nice aesthetic touch but of course it's not a deal breaker, nor is it integral to the way the OS runs and runs applications but it would be nice to have it running.
