I have an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation). I'm having a weird issue with Hulu (and only Hulu) where everything I'm watching on my 4K TV looks low-res and blurry -- like 720p or worse. Other streaming apps are working fine.

Stuff I checked:
  • every title I stream on Hulu on my Apple TV looks like crap
  • my internet connection is very fast and stable
  • other streaming apps all stream at high quality
  • streaming the same show on Hulu in Safari on my Mac, on the same wifi network, looks fine
  • I restarted the Apple TV of course
  • I deleted and reinstalled the Hulu app
This is driving me crazy. It's clearly an issue with Hulu on the Apple TV specifically but I can't figure out what. Posting on the off chance anyone else is having the same issue. If Hulu was having issues with bandwidth generally, I think I'd be seeing it on my Mac, but it's only on the Apple TV. Possible some bugginess with their app?

Had a similar issue when I upgraded my TV. Old unit worked Great, New one had some problems with some Chanel’s. After playing with settings for a day I finely replaced my HDMI cables. Problems gone. Yes I was using 4K High speed cables (they were 4- 5 yr. Old and worked fine with the old TV) the new ones are now 8K 120Hz ($10 on Amazon) and NO more problems. I don’t have Hulu but have you check your Hulu settings?

I can access Hulu via the Disney+ app in addition to the Hulu app itself.

Both pictures appear to be the same quality when I quickly switch back and forth while watching Alien Earth in 4k on an older LG OLED c7.

My 2nd Gen AppleTV 4k is connected to an Anthem pre/pro with 6-foot Amazon Basics 4k cables.

And use the Belkin. I can’t explain why. It just works.😳

This is off the original topic, but have you been having problems with the D+ app playing some HDR content? I tried to watch Alien Earth via the D+ app because it's in DV versus HDR10, but it won't play in HDR at all. I've had to go back to using the Hulu app to get HDR.

I cannot get HDR or DV from any content on the Disney+ app.

HDR/DV hasn't worked via the AppleTV for quite some time. I'm running the latest version of the D+ app too.

I was having a similar problem with the FuboTV app. It was ONLY Fubotv. I just went into the network settings (on the router) and tweaked some settings to prioritize streaming (vs. other internet apps), and it seems to have helped. Good luck.

I'm going to check this. I'm glad you mentioned the fact that Alien Earth is on Disney+ as well. I had forgotten that, and this enables me to make an end run around the problematic Hulu app.

How can I tell if it's playing in HDR10?

When a TV starts playing HDR or DV content, many will temporarily display the HDR or DV logo in the screen corner.

Thanks for checking that. Whatever the issue I've been having is, it doesn't seem to be widespread and I'm tired of tracking it down. Since Hulu content is available on Disney+ (which works fine for me), I'll just use that instead. They're apparently phasing out the Hulu app anyway so I will probably just delete it. It's a bit of a shame, as it's one of the few that uses Apple's native video player, but whatever.
