Hey there,
I've got a late 2008 (5,1) MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz and am getting frustrated with its performance.
I went through dramas in late 2009 with the i7 27" iMacs (went through 3 units before getting a refund) so had my TM backup go from the MB to the iMac (1) to the MB to the iMac (2) to the MB to the iMac (3) to the MB again, and that's where it's staying.
But something isn't quite right - performance is poor, I seem to always have to keep repairing the disk and its permissions - it's just really frustrating.
The only change since I purchased it was upgrading 2GB to 4GB RAM.
I was looking at upgrading to the new Mac Pro (announced overnight) but cost is making it prohibitive vs performance given the i7 iMac price, but given I've moved offices, a glossy iMac isn't going to be a suitable option (plus part of the issue was consistently large numbers of dead pixels on the screen during the 2009 dramas). But given the cost of the Mac Pro (i.e. no change) for essentially the same specs as the 09 model, it's hard to part with the money.
My plan always was that when I get a new Mac, I would do a fresh clean install, and then migrate bit-by-bit the parts I want - Mail, iTunes library, etc. I'm more than happy to re-install all of my software again - CS4 (soon to be 5), etc. I've been thinking this as I just have the feeling that the switching between Macs in late 2009 has done something which is just hindering performance.
But now that a new Mac may not be possible (and the Mac Minis aren't really a speed bump enough from the MB to warrant a purchase), I was wondering what people's advice was for my current MacBook, and how I can go about doing my bit-by-bit manual restore, or what other ideas people may have.
Given others have reported poor performance and feedback has been to true SMART Utility, I've done this and it came back with 0 errors and the overall SMART Status as passing.
Any advice you're able to give on how to clean up my current system, or rebuild with a clean install and bit-by-bit recovery would be great - just love to hear others opinions on what steps I can take.
Cheers,
M
