pop up bubbles

hey folks.
I am using 10.6.3 on a quad core MP.

It seems that some apps are now giving me pop up bubles telling me X,Y,Z is done processing or downloading. It's freakin' annoying.

Anyone know how to get rid of them or hide them?
It is happening in Calibre when I am converting books as an example
