Yes, I was stupid.
I popped off the shift key on the left side of the keyboard. Well, first I spilled my cappuccino all over my new Magic Keyboard.
Then after drying it all off, I wanted to look under one of the keys to see if I’d find more milky coffee.
So I popped off the shift key, and now I cannot get it back on.
Really, I’ve tried for over an hour and it’s driving me insane.
Anyone know how to properly get these keys back into place?

Sorry to hear this, and sorry I can‘t help. Since scissor keys have been around for years there are probably YouTube videos, thought I don't know what may have changed in the current design.

I am interested in the Spillproofness of MK so wanted to ask if the rest of the keyboard is still working?

Unlike a laptop there is no logic board to be damaged, so maybe the MK keyboard is tougher than I thought if it is still working.

Yeah it’s actually working just fine. I immediately unplugged the power and pulled my iPad off so it wouldn’t have power.
Then held it upside down and dabbed the keyboard with paper towels to get as much of the coffee off (I dumped almost a full cappuccino on it).

So yeah, happy it’s actually working pretty well.. just wish I didn’t take the shift key off because that’s missing now..

This video on youtube shows the process for removing and re-setting keys on the external apple wireless keybaord. Given they both use a scissor switch mechaism this may apply to the new MK. Let me know if it works.

I don't know which is worse, potentially damaging the Magic Keyboard or losing almost an entire cappuccino! ;) Here's hoping you have success getting that shift key back on there!

if you have AppleCare+ for your iPad, your keyboard is also covered (for the 2020 iPads Pro)

Seeing that video was helpful, just to confirm I wasn't losing my mind and was going about it the right way. Thanks @Macintosh101 .
Sadly, I still can't get the shift key in place to where it locks down and stays put. I think maybe I damaged the tiny little plastic points on the key or scissor switch when prying it off? I can line up the key and press it down to "engage", but it won't stay put. Kind of wobbles around and eventually will just fall off.

Setup a return to Apple. Hoping they just accept the return and don't investigate too much..
Replacement is on it's way.

@Nikhil72 I have AppleCare+, but the iPad Pro is 2018, so does that mean it won't apply to the new magic case?

If you still have active AppleCare+ on your 2018 iPP, then yes, it extends to your MK. And it will as long as you have AppleCare+ so if at the end of your initial two years of coverage, you can opt to continue coverage by enrolling in the monthly payment option.

No worries. Same thing (although a different key) happened on a Macbook Pro I had in 2018. The little plastic clips on the underside of the keys are very fragile and easily snap, and once that happens it‘s impossible to re-seat the key correctly.

That must be the case for me then because the key just won't stay put.

I confirmed with Apple today my AC+ coverage for my 2018 iPad Pro, so good on that front, but still seeing if I can just return this guy and start over ;)
